Shoes: Just Say No to Italian-Style Loafers

They have square toes.  They have elastic webbing between the tongue and the side.  They take up aisles and aisles at your local shoe discounter.  And they occupy an unfortunate No Man's Land across which you should fear to tread.

They come in all shapes and sizes and colors.  The best among them have slender soles, unexaggerated toes, and a slim shape.  The worst look like leather shoeboxes or scuba fins.  You shouldn't wear them with a suit because they're too casual; they look funny with jeans because they're often too dressy (chiefly in black).  In fact, I'm not sure when it does make sense to wear them.  Mine have long since gone to Goodwill.

Get yourself some wingtips.  Or some boots.  Or some plimsolls.  Or all three.  Diversify.

  1. I have a pair of these in a rich red/brown. They go well with business casual. But yes, they don't look good with a suit, nor with jeans.

  2. I must admit, business casual is a gap in my learnedness. It's been a long time since I had a biz-caz job, and those were in the Dark Times before my Awakening.
